Inspiration

What do you do when you get in a design rut?

Rob Soulé is talking about this in a very helpful article over at Godbit.

A while back Garret Dimon posted a great article about how to receive inspiration from design without ending up copying it. It’s an awesome idea – you just take mini-screenshots of bits and pieces of design that you like, and paste them into a collage. I’ve been using this method successfully for a while now. Not only is it fun to do, but you end up with some cool collages.

Here’s one that I recently did for a design:

By the way, I highly recommend Dan Cederholm's book "Bulletproof Web Design":http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=as2&path=ASIN/0321346939&tag=artofmission-20&camp=1789&creative=9325

That's a really nifty idea. Now if only there were a program where we could highlight bits and pieces and collage them automatically! I keep seeing that book around too and never go for it. Maybe I will, thanks.

Natalie - that would be pretty neat. I have a fairly easy system with my Mac - I just hit Command-Control-Shift-4, and then I can draw a box around whatever I want to take a picture of on the screen. Then I just paste it into Photoshop, add a quick shadow effect, and voila! Folks, sorry about my broken comment form. I'm working to get it fixed right now.
