CrossConnector's New Server

July 12th, 2005

This afternoon I was very pleased to introduce the other computers in the office to my new Dell server.

I’ve been up to my elbows in Ruby code for CrossConnector, and it feels nice to take a break and do something completely nerdy – installing FreeBSD on a brand new system. It has been a long time since I’ve installed a BSD system.

I’m still a little blown away by what a good deal this system was. The sum total, including shipping (which was free) and tax, was $309. And Dell threw in a $50 rebate. So I got a 2.53 GHz machine with 512 MB of memory and an 80 GB hard drive for $250. Not too shabby.

The next fun part will be setting up my Ruby on Rails development environment on it. Hopefully hosting the dev environment on a separate server will allow me to code faster by keeping the files off my little 12” PowerBook, and it will let me check out CrossConnector in some other environments.
